I sang my songs, "I John" a crowd favorite, and coincidentally Elvis' favorite gospel number, and my one quartet song. Then Miss Jenna Oakley helped me perform "Sweetest Song I Know", then it was over, but I was told to stay on the stage, and I was presented this handsome silver and blue plaque which read 2014 Horizon Award...Logan Pettis.
I was told that this was an award decided upon by the board of directors for the new, up and coming artist, who is the biggest blessing to STGMA. I also heard it said by someone who is a beacon of light on the Horizon lighting the way for the future. That's a lot to take in for the kid from Missouri whose testimony is usually about being told nobody liked him, he's weird, and will NEVER amount to anything. Needless to say I was rendered speechless, by yet another example of God's grace and goodness. All kinds of things rushed through my head in that moment so if would have been able to collect my thoughts here's my acceptance speech.
WOW!! It took me 13 years and over 1,000 miles to be named new artist huh? Seriously though, I am truly grateful to be standing here receiving this award especially since there was a time, not all that long ago, that I wasn't sure If I was ever going to sing another song, I wasn't sure if I would ever see any of you again, but as he always does, God had a plan. Seeing God's plan unfold in my life has been truly remarkable, and this is no different.
Six short months ago, I was gonna' move down here, live in my car, and just trust in God's plan. I felt called to come back to Texas somewhere back in October, with no place to really go, no job, but I kept hearing this voice telling me it was all under control, that God would provide. He did. He sent me y'all. I had never really met Sue and Denny Fisher when they so graciously took me in, let me live in their travel trailer, in their driveway. They fed me, housed me, acted as surrogate parents while I tried to find gainful employment and a place to live and I am forever grateful.
Thats not without mentioning the rest of you. Fay Gassner is such a genuine, beautiful, spirit and has done her best to help me when I needed and is an inspiration. And the STGMA board, and general membership, from your words of encouragement, to prayers, its all been so much more than I ever could have imagined being a part of this family of singers and ministers who take care of one another as God has commanded us to to. Just the other day my car was dead and Lilly Hutton says call this person, they live in town, they'll help you, and I still haven't officially say thanks for the BBQ and cake. There are so many of you in this room who have been there for me in this great adventure and I thank you all from the bottom of my heart.
There are however a few people who aren't here I'd like to dedicate this award to the memory of, one is my Grandma Leeper, who would have loved to have seen my ministry, who would have loved this convention. Another one is my late friend and mentor, my teacher, Mr. Stephen Hill. Stephen would've love to have seen all of his students up here. There are at least three in the room. Young Jenna, My dear friend Megan, and Myself. Maybe even Jaxon Edwards over there. Without Stephen's words of wisdom and encouragement I think I might have folded this thing up a couple years ago but he taught me confidence, and how to own the stage. He taught me lots of stuff about loving people, loving God, and loving myself. Most important he taught me to "relax and breathe, lighten up, man live life have fun, yell, loudly, in public. People will think you're nuts, but no one ever argues with the Crazy Man". So Stephen this is for you buddy. Thank you all again.
